Sadistic

Are you Sadistic?

Very few people would enjoy finding out that they may be sadistic. A person is considered sadistic if they appear to enjoy hurting or humiliating other people. This might sound like a boss you may have had in the past or even now. Two different levels of sadism are possible. One disorder involves the enjoyment of hurting others while the second is much stronger. While someone with the higher disorder may also enjoy hurting people, they often do it for other reasons.

A sadistic person does not show up overnight. If you look carefully, you can see how the individual slowly progresses from simple emotional or physical attacks to complicated and well thought out attacks. What signs can you look for to see if someone you love has sadistic tendencies? Most of the time the best signs can be seen during the teenage years and puberty when the body's hormone levels change. The radical change can reveal these tendencies but it is not the cause.

A person that has trouble remaining in relationships may have some forms of sadism. This does not mean all people who have relationship problems are a sadist. If the other person in the relationship could be interviewed, you might find that he or she thought the other was too controlling and had to have things done a certain way. The potential sadist may have lost his or her temper quite easily and said things that they later apologized for. If the individual is caught lying for no apparent reason, it could be that they lied for reasons that only a sadistic person would understand.

If your child appears to take pleasure when someone else gets hurt or if he or she uses intimidation to get things from others, these may be early warning signs of a possible problem. School bullies often intimidate others because they have a need for power and enjoy the terror they create in others. This should not be discounted or ignored as just a phase the child is going through. Something more serious may be the problem and counseling is strongly recommended. While most young boys are interested in some form of violence, a predominant interest in weapons, martial arts, violence, war, injury and torture are very good signs of a potential problem.

Sadistic people do not just suddenly decide one day to act the way they do. Usually there is no single point in their life that can be blamed for the sadistic nature. The process is just that, a process. If you feel you might be sadistic or someone you care for might be, the healing process is very extensive and there are no guarantees that it will even work. Making the sadist aware of the problem will often go a long way to controlling the problem but much hard work on both sides will be needed for long-term treatments.
