Sadism and our Prisons Sadism is a term that refers to those who get some sort of enjoyment from seeing others hurt either emotionally or physically. Many people who have sadistic tendencies somehow gravitate to jobs that can allow them to fulfill their sadistic needs. One area that many sadists are moving to is law enforcement, specifically in prisons. Today in the modern prison, sadism appears to be flourishing. An alarming number of inmates appear to suffer from an increasing amount of injuries each year in the prison system. Although others claim this rise is due to housing problems and the overfilling of prisons in general. Studies are being conducted to determine where the problem might lay. However, if you take statistics and compare them with population growths, the numbers do seem to be increasing disproportionately. Some officers are coming forward with claims that sadism is on the rise among not only the prisoners but among the law enforcement guards that are supposed to protect the prisoner from unnecessary harm. How can people allow this to go on? Simply put, out of sight and out of mind. If we do not see it happening, then we do not have to deal with it. Over the last twenty years, the number of guards that have been reprimanded for practicing sadistic practices has risen. In the prison system, very few people see anything wrong with physically hurting a prisoner because they probably asked for it. This is not to say that there are some really bad people in prison who would love to take advantage of bleeding hearts who are trying to stop all violence in prisons. Perhaps though, it would be possible to change the way applicants are screened that want to work in the prison system might help. Unfortunately, this type of screening will cost money and that is something the prison system simply does not have. Most wardens complain they cannot keep staff long enough and that people in general do not want to work in that type of system. The people who do want to work in such horrible conditions are often the one who practice sadism and should not be there. The few good people who might be trying to make a difference often become sadistic after being exposed to the prison system for a length of time. The problem becomes balancing the need for staff and the need to keep the prisoner in reasonable safety. Not many people are aware of what happens on the inside of a prison except what Hollywood wants them to know. Sadism runs rampant in almost every prison and people are beginning to give up hope that this is going to change. It will not change either until the way prisons are operated changes or until massive amounts of money are afforded the system to find guards that do not exhibit sadism. |
