The Marquis de Sade was a French aristocrat who wrote a great number of books including short stories, plays, and political tracts. He published some of his works under his own name and others were released anonymously. Perhaps the most well known work that the Marquis de Sade worked on involved erotic novels that revealed bizarre sexual fantasies intermixed with violence. Some of these writings combined sex with blasphemy against the church. Many would say the Marquis believed strongly in freedom that was not restricted by morality or religious law. Throughout his life, the Marquis spent time in a number of different prisons for his beliefs. Over thirty-two years were spent in various places including thirteen years in an insane asylum. While he spent time at his various incarcerations, he wrote many of his erotic works that would be recognized around the world one day. The term, sadism comes from his own name. A few years back, the Marquis's current heir found some of his work in a trunk and allowed it to be published. This find was very important as most of the Marquis' work was thought to be lost. The Marquis de Sade appeared to be involved in so many scandals during his lifetime. The first involved the hiring of a prostitute who claimed to be mistreated by the Marquis de Sade. She escaped from his property by climbing out a second story window. The police began to keep an eye on him but nothing was done until several other women complained of being tortured. Because of his connections, the Marquis usually was usually able to avoid prison and spend time at his property. Not long after the first scandal, the Marquis received letter de cachet from the king, which would haunt his family for many years to come. After the French revolution, the Marquis de Sade became part of the new government even though he had an aristocratic background. He wrote many political papers until he was again imprisoned for the final time. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered his arrest for his work that was published anonymously entitled Justine and Juliette. His family worked hard to keep him out of prison and they were able to get him placed in an asylum again. He continued to be accused of seducing other prisoners and people staying in the asylum. When he died, most of his work was burned by his family. Marquis de Sade was often quoted and referred to by other people because of his controversial work. His work got a revision when some of that work was found by his current heir. The works have been spread out among different places. His name has become synonymous with the many acts of violence that followed him around during his life. People often confuse his image with one that is more sexual in nature but that is not really the case. |
